2016-2017 School Year Info!
The new studio is amazing! The
students are having a great time dancing in our bigger, better space. I want to
highlight a few things you will want to know for the new school year in Dance.
- In order to maximize time we will need to wear our outdoor
shoes during lessons.
- Acceptable shoes in the dance
studio include tennis shoes, sneakers, flats with a strap around the
foot, vans, converse and any other shoes that covers the toes and the
heel.
- When we explore Ballet and Jazz
the students will wear socks or bare feet to properly execute dance movements.
We have an entire supply of BRAND NEW TAP SHOES! Students will get to wear
these during the class time (please wear socks.)
-If you have Ballet, Jazz or Tap
shoes that you would like your child to bring and keep in the Dance Studio (I'm
working on shoe storage!!) you may do so. Mark their name clearly on both pairs
of shoes and bring them in a zip lock labeled as well.
- Attire is the same as last
year, but please remember to include shorts underneath dresses and skirts for
comfortable dancing.
- We have 3 classroom rules this
year that I encourage you to talk with your children about!
1. Be in Control of
Your Body
2. Be in Control of
Your Voice
3. Be in Control of
Your Mind
Thank you- Mrs. Evans

BOOM, CLAP, STOMP! Body Percussion- Dance Thunderstorm
BOOM, CLAP, STOMP, SNAP, PAT, WHACK, SLAP
If you have walked by the Dance classroom this week, you may have been hearing lots of booming, percussive and interesting sounds!
My dancers have been learning about Body Percussion. What is a Percussion Instrument? How can we make our body sound like Percussion instruments? Create your own Body Percussion compositions!
The creativity and knowledge of movement by the students was astounding! They created a composition sheet with their percussion movements/sounds along with symbols that represent those movements. The key assists other to read and perform the movements/sounds.

Shape Movement Sequences
In the last few weeks the 1st-4th grades have been using MATH in DANCE! To their surprise---- it is possible to do!
Our lesson started off by doing a new warm up where the students stretch and count patterns of numbers. We have done 8,4,2,1 and then in reverse, as well as 9,6,3 in reverse too. I wanted to incorporate counting with the beat of the music during our stretch to help teach the importance of keeping with the tempo of the song.
Each student was given one of the 3 shapes: Circle, Triangle, or a Square. We determined that a circle has no true sides, but has one continuous round edge, a Traingle has 3 side, and a Square has 4. Depending on which shape a student got, they created counts of movement EQUAL to how many sides their shape had.
We all taught our combinations to the class and composed a dance made up of all of our movement sequences. Here are some photos and videos that show their creations!

2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade Movement Stories.
For 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders in Dance class this week, we created movements from several short stories. The students read a story together and put together movements that expressed the story's words.
Some of our Movement Stories included:
"Like Butter on Pancakes"
"Snow"
"I am a Dancer"
"Dragon Dancing"

May the Dance Force Be with You!
Since Star Wars has recently come out with a new addition to the saga I decided that it would be a perfect time to incorporate glow sticks as "Light Sabers" into our dance lesson!
We used small glow sticks and turned out the lights to make it even cooler! My Kindergarten Academy students danced along with the powerful Star Wars music and performed sharp movements. I then changed it to a slower more steady Star Wars song or asked them to move slower and create smooth movements with their "Light Saber."
When we finished our activity we discussed which movements we liked better between either smooth or sharp. The students got to demonstrate a smooth or sharp movement to the class.
